Today, is World Autism Awareness Day. This will be the seventh year that the world will commemorate this day. This United Nations mandated observation shines a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis. Organisations all over the world will rise as one voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are undiagnosed, misunderstood and looking for help. Blue has been chosen as the colour symbolic of autism.
I love my new job as a Specialist Support Staff for people who are autistic and having intellectual challenges. I've been here for nearly a month and every moment is exciting, dynamic, memorable, enjoyable and just utterly fantastic! My role is to support 24/7 the needs and activities of clients who are 13-23 years old, 5-2 to 7-0 tall. Each day is different and challenging
I'm like a big brother to these kids/youth who live in a big house. They are self-sufficient in terms of doing household chores, laundry, cleaning, cooking, vacuuming. I never realised that there are people who gets paid for "sleeping on the job" until now. I'm just loving it!
It's been a week since I started in this new job as a Specialist Support Staff. My clients are younger and with heaps of challenging behaviour. I hope my Diploma in Adult Education qualification will help overcome the day-to-day activities. Three adults with ADHD, autism, and ASD is really full-on. Add to that is the fact that two are non-verbal and one is very vocal, ayayay!
Well this is another phase of my teaching life. It is tiresome but exciting and at the end of the day, the pay is good enough. I have begun to make positive in-roads in their lives and that is priceless!
